A race predictor is a digital tool that uses a runner’s recent performance at one distance to estimate how they will perform at another. By applying mathematical formulas like the Riegel Formula, it calculates how your speed will naturally scale up or down across different race lengths. It essentially translates your current fitness level into a roadmap for future goals.
How accurate is this race predictor?
This tool uses the Riegel Formula (T2 = T1 * (D2 / D1) ^ fatigue factor), which is the gold standard for running predictions. To make it more accurate for you, we include a “fatigue factor” adjustment. High-mileage runners usually see a 6% decay (1.06), while lower-mileage runners may see up to 12% (1.12). Choosing your mileage level ensures your prediction is more realistic.
Why do I need a mile by mile split chart?
In long races like a marathon, “banking time” by running too fast early on is a recipe for hitting the wall. A mile by mile split chart gives you specific checkpoints. If you reach mile 10 and you’re ahead of the chart, you know to dial it back; if you’re behind, you know exactly how much time you need to make up.
Does this calculator work for kilometers?
Absolutely. You can toggle the units between miles and kilometers using the button at the top. The split chart will automatically convert into a kilometer-by-kilometer version to match your preference.
My predicted marathon time seems too fast. Why?
Predictions assume you have done the specific training required for that distance. If you use a 5K time to predict a marathon, the math assumes you have the endurance to back it up. If you haven’t done long runs, you’ll likely find the prediction is a “best-case scenario” rather than a guarantee.
Can I use this for trail races?
This tool is optimized for flat, paved surfaces (like road races or track events). Trail races involve elevation changes and technical terrain that significantly slow down your pace. For trails, you can use this as a “flat equivalent” baseline, but expect your actual splits to be much slower.
Should I use a 5K or a half marathon for the best prediction?
The closer the “recent result” distance is to your “target race,” the more accurate the prediction will be. If you are training for a marathon, a recent half marathon result will give you a much better prediction than a 1-mile or 5K sprint.
Does weather affect these predictions?
Yes. Most race predictors assume “ideal” conditions (around 45–55°F or 7–13°C). If it is very hot or humid, your heart rate will be higher, and you should likely adjust your target splits to be 10–15 seconds per mile slower to avoid overheating.
