One of the very first things you notice about the On Cloudswift 4 is that it does not scream “I am a runner.” It has the clean, architectural silhouette that On has mastered, looking just as natural under a pair of jeans as it does on a starting line. But don’t let the lifestyle styling fool you. Underneath that flat-knit upper is a snappy daily trainer that is ready to work. It is designed to navigate urban asphalt, sharp turns, and daily paces without missing a beat.

During my testing, I put around 50 miles on my pair. I took them out for short recovery jogs, a couple of quick lunch runs, and even used them as my go-to walking shoes. What I found is a shoe that does not try to be a revolution. Instead, it serves as a highly reliable crossover partner. It is slightly on the heavy side when compared to pure tempo racers, but it makes up for it in durability and street-level versatility.

If you want a shoe that can drop an 18-minute 5K and then blend right into the crowd at a local coffee shop, this is a strong candidate. It is a solid performer that gets the job done cleanly, even if the ride takes some time to settle.

Who Should Buy the On Cloudswift 4?

  • Urban commuters who want one stylish pair of shoes that can handle short runs, gym sessions, and all-day walking.
  • Runners who prefer a firmer, more grounded ride over towering, pillowy max-cushion setups.
  • Those who love a snug, sock-like upper fit but still want room for natural forefoot expansion.

Who Should Avoid the On Cloudswift 4?

  • Maximalist runners looking for an ultra-plush, sink-in soft experience on recovery days.
  • Speedworkers seeking a featherlight racer for track workouts and high-cadence tempos.
  • Wide-footed runners who find narrow midfoot cages cause hot spots or pinching.

The Flat-Knit Upper: Sock-Like Hug Without the Toe Cramp

The upper is constructed from a single-piece, flat-knit engineered mesh made from recycled polyester. It slips on like a sock and wraps around the foot securely. I love the socklike upper because the material is soft and adapting. If you have a slightly wider forefoot, do not panic when you first step in. While the midfoot cage runs a bit narrow up top, the knit is not rigid at all. It stretches nicely to accommodate your foot, meaning your toes never feel cramped or pinched during a run.

Lockdown is managed by an integrated lacing cage that pulls the knit tight around your arch. It holds you firmly in place, which is perfect when navigating tight city corners or dealing with uneven sidewalks. The breathability is decent, thanks to venting perforations over the toe box, though it can still run slightly warm on hot, humid afternoons. For daily city miles, it’s a cozy place to be.

The Midsole Ride: Firmer ground feel that softens over time

If you are expecting the pillowy, marshmallow-soft ride of the On Cloudmonster 3 or other max-cushion trainers, you will be surprised. The ride of the Cloudswift 4 is on the firmer side out of the box. On uses a dual-density Helion™ superfoam setup, placing a softer layer on top and a denser, more protective block below. Working in tandem with a nylon-blend Speedboard®, the platform feels highly responsive and stable, but it does not give you that sink-in softness.

However, the foam requires a break-in period. During my runs, I noticed the platform begins to soften up after maybe 25 miles in the shoes. Once the Helion foam breaks in, it transitions into a smooth, structured, and pleasant daily ride. It absorbs concrete impacts well while providing a solid, connected feel of the road. It is a great option for runners who dislike wobbly, super-soft platforms and want a stable, firm ramp that keeps them moving forward.

Stability and Traction: Built for the concrete jungle

The outsole features segmented grip pads placed in high-abrasion zones, leaving the central channel open. This setup grips dry and wet asphalt reliably, letting you take tight street corners with confidence. The rubber compounds are dense and durable, showing very little wear after my initial 50 miles. Because the channels are relatively shallow, you won’t have to worry about picking gravel out of your sole after running past a construction site.

On Cloudswift 4 vs. Cloudswift 3: What changed?

The transition from the Cloudswift 3 to the Cloudswift 4 is a story of subtle refinement. The most significant upgrade is the midsole foam layout. While the Cloudswift 3 relied on a single-density block of Helion foam, the 4 uses a dual-density setup that improves shock absorption on hard surfaces. The Speedboard® has also been updated, transitioning from TPU to a more responsive, eco-friendly injection-molded nylon blend. This gives the newer model a slightly snappier toe-off.

Additionally, the flat-knit upper has been reworked for a cleaner, more adaptive hold. While both shoes share a narrow midfoot cage, the Cloudswift 4 knit feels softer and less restrictive over the toes. If you already own the Cloudswift 3 and it still has life, there is no urgent need to upgrade. But if you are choosing between the two, the improved foam ride and cleaner look of the v4 make it the better buy.

The Bottom Line: A stylish street-to-gym companion

The On Cloudswift 4 does not do anything amazing, but it does most things just fine. It is a highly versatile daily trainer that trades ultra-soft cushioning for responsiveness, stability, and stunning aesthetics. It looks great, holds the foot securely, and provides a stable ride that transitions perfectly from workouts to lifestyle wear. If you want a plush recovery shoe, look elsewhere. But if you want a reliable urban crossover that can handle short runs and look sharp doing it, this is the one.

Is it a revolution? No. Does it need to be? Also no.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the On Cloudswift 4 good for wide feet?

The midfoot cage of the Cloudswift 4 runs narrow. However, because the flat-knit upper is soft and non-rigid, it stretches to accommodate your foot, preventing your toes from feeling cramped. Wide-footed runners should try on a half size up.

How long does it take to break in the Cloudswift 4?

The Helion™ superfoam feels quite firm initially. You will notice the midsole softens up and becomes more comfortable after about 25 miles of running or walking.

Can I run a marathon in the On Cloudswift 4?

While you can run any distance in them, the Cloudswift 4 is best suited for short-to-medium city runs (under 10 miles) and gym workouts. For long marathon training, a softer, higher-stack shoe like the Cloudmonster is recommended.

Is the On Cloudswift 4 true to size?

Yes, it generally runs true to size in length. However, because the midfoot cage fits snugly to provide support on concrete surfaces, runners with high arches or high-volume feet may want to size up by a half size for extra volume.

Can I use the On Cloudswift 4 for gym workouts and HIIT?

Absolutely. The dual-density foam and firmer Speedboard setup make it far more stable for lateral gym movements, squats, and HIIT classes than typical squishy, high-stack running shoes which can feel unstable off the road.

When was the On Cloudswift 4 released?

The On Cloudswift 4 was officially released on March 2025.
