Brooks Ghost 16 Review: A Firm and Fun Daily Workhorse

The Brooks Ghost line is like that one friend who is always on time for run club, dependable. I’ve laced up nearly every iteration, from the 14 all the way to the new Ghost 17.

While I normally gravitate toward a much squishier, bouncier shoe, the Ghost 16 really surprised me. It completely separates itself from its siblings. The newer 17 feels like a more versatile trainer, but the 16 has a distinct, firmer snap that actually makes me reach for it when I want to push the pace.

It might not look quite as sleek on the shoe rack as the 17, but the Ghost 16 has a specific kind of magic for those days when you need a responsive, no-nonsense ride. Let’s break down exactly what makes it worth it.

Brooks Ghost 16 Performance Review

  • + Protective impact absorption

Snug and Secure: The Fit & Upper

The engineered mesh upper on the Ghost 16 is exactly what you expect from Brooks: incredibly plush around the heel collar with a very dialed-in lockdown. When I cinch the laces down before a faster tempo run, my foot stays perfectly in place without any weird pinching.

Breathability is solid; my feet never feel overheated, even on warmer afternoon runs in the heat and humidity. The toe box room is standard—not overly wide, but perfectly accommodating for my feet.

Snappy and Firm: The Ride (Midsole)

Here is where the Ghost 16 really defines itself for me. Brooks updated this version with their nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam. While that sounds like it should be super squishy, I actually find the 16 to be noticeably firmer than the 17. But don’t get me wrong, it is still incredibly comfortable.

That firmness translates directly into responsiveness. When I am doing faster paces, the midsole doesn’t absorb all my energy; it returns it, making transitions from heel to toe feel quick and snappy. It is my personal choice for tempo runs where I want that extra bit of traditional ground feel.

RC
Our Take The Brooks Ghost 16 is the definition of a utilitarian daily workhorse; it will easily absorb the repetitive pounding of your pavement miles and last forever, but its noticeably firm nitrogen-infused foam simply won’t give you that squishy, high-energy bounce many prefer.

Built to Last: Traction & Durability (Outsole)

If there is one thing you can count on with a Ghost, it is durability. The Ghost 16 uses Brooks’ RoadTack rubber outsole, and the coverage is generous. I have taken these over wet pavement, light gravel, and slick sidewalks, and the grip never wavers. It is a highly reliable daily trainer that will easily eat up hundreds of miles before showing significant wear and tear. I’m proof because I’ve taken my pair well over 200 miles with no significant signs of significant wear or loss of durability.

Brooks Ghost 16 vs. Brooks Ghost 17

Having run in both, the contrast is clear. The Ghost 17 is a better shoe for easy, long, and recovery days because it feels softer underfoot. The 17 also wins in the aesthetics department. However, the 16 is firmer and more responsive, making it my preferred pick for faster tempo efforts.

The Good (Pro) and The Bad (Con)

  • Pro: Excellent firmness and responsiveness for faster tempo runs.
  • Pro: Incredible durability and reliable traction from the RoadTack rubber.
  • Pro: Very comfortable, plush upper with a secure lockdown and stable ride.
  • Con: The aesthetic design is a bit dated compared to the sleek look of the newer Ghost 17.
  • Con: Overshadowed by newer, softer alternatives if you are looking for a pure recovery shoe.

Final Verdict: Who’s The Ghost 16 Best for?

Who Should Buy This:

You should buy the Brooks Ghost 16 if you want a reliable, durable daily trainer that leans on the firmer side. It is fantastic for runners who prefer a high drop (12mm) and want a shoe that feels snappy and responsive during faster tempo runs.

Plus, you can snag the Ghost 16 for way less than the 17. If you’re on a budget, you’re basically getting 85% of the newer shoe’s performance for a fraction of the price.

Who Should Avoid This:

You should avoid this shoe if you are looking for a highly versatile, max-cushioned cruiser for slow recovery days. If you want a softer underfoot feel and a more modern design, you are better off grabbing the Ghost 17.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

When was the Brooks Ghost 16 released?

The Brooks Ghost 16 officially launched May 2024. It is currently widely available at most major running retailers.

Does the Brooks Ghost 16 work for wide feet?

Yes. Brooks is known for having a very accommodating, true-to-size fit, and the Ghost 16 is no exception. The engineered mesh upper has a nice stretch to it, and Brooks offers the shoe in medium, wide, and extra-wide sizing options to fit almost any foot shape.

Is the Ghost 16 good for beginners?

Absolutely. Its high durability, comfortable upper, and traditional 12mm drop make it a very safe and reliable choice for someone just getting into the sport.

Is the Ghost 16 a super soft, squishy shoe?

Not exactly. If you generally gravitate toward a squishier shoe with a lot of give and bounce, the Ghost 16 will feel a bit different. While the DNA LOFT v3 upgrade makes it softer than older models, it still leans toward a structured, traditional feel. It delivers a distinct, firmer snap underfoot rather than a sinking, plush sensation.

What is the heel drop on the Ghost 16, and who is it for?

The Ghost 16 maintains a high 12mm heel-to-toe drop. This makes it an absolutely fantastic option for heel strikers, as the geometry naturally catches your heel and rolls you forward. It’s also great for runners who want to take a little bit of pressure off their calves and Achilles tendons during longer efforts.

What is the biggest update from the Ghost 15 to the Ghost 16?

The most significant change is the midsole foam. Brooks upgraded the Ghost 16 from DNA LOFT v2 to the nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3. This makes the shoe noticeably lighter and a bit softer underfoot, giving it a much better energy return and a slightly bouncier ride than the 15, while still retaining that classic Ghost durability.
