Nike Vaporfly 4 Review: Why It’s My Go-To 5K Racer

The “Super Shoe” wars are often about doing more—more foam, more stack, more bounce. But with the Nike Vaporfly 4, Nike has done something different: they’ve grown up.

After spending significant time in the Vaporfly 3, which felt fast but occasionally precarious, I found the Vaporfly 4 to be a refreshing change of pace. It feels like the “mature” older sibling in the lineup—refined, composed, and deceptively fast.

I’ve spent the last few months putting this shoe through its paces, from track intervals to 5K races. If you’re looking for a running shoe that balances that signature ZoomX pop with a newfound sense of stability, this review is for you.

Performance Review: Ride, Stability, and Energy Return

When comparing the Vaporfly 4 to its predecessor, the Vaporfly 3, the difference is immediate. The Vaporfly 3 was fast, sure, but it often felt a bit wild—unstable in the corners and harsh if your form broke down.

The Vaporfly 4 corrects this. It feels significantly more stable and mature underfoot. But don’t mistake “mature” for “boring.” In my testing, I actually found the 4 to be bouncier and faster than the 3. It gives you that aggressive energy return you expect from a top-tier racer, but with a platform that feels planted. It’s a rare combination: a shoe that trusts you to run fast, but also supports you when you do.

Nike Vaporfly 4

  • ✓Delivers the aggressive energy return of a super shoe with a more “mature,” planted feel that keeps you confident in the corners.
  • ✓An ultra-lightweight build that vanishes on your foot, letting you focus on pure velocity rather than the weight on your legs.
  • ✓Great design with some amazing colorway options.

PROS

  • + Feels significantly more energetic and aggressive than the Vaporfly 3.
  • + Extremely light on foot; they almost disappear while running.

CONS

  • – The heel counter still struggles with lock-in.
  • – The outsole design and exposed foam easily pick up rocks and gravel.

The Sweet Spot: 5Ks to Half Marathons

I’ve used the Vaporfly 4 to hit several Personal Bests recently, including a 2-mile PB that I credit largely to the shoe’s ability to turn over quickly.

However, every shoe has its limit. Here is how I fit the Vaporfly 4 into my rotation:

  • 5K to Half Marathon: This is where the shoe shines. It’s lightweight, aggressive, and stable enough to rail corners in a local 5K.
  • The Marathon Line: For the full 26.2 miles, I still wouldn’t choose these. While they are stable, they don’t save the legs the way the Nike Alphafly does. For the marathon distance, I want maximum cushioning to absorb the pounding; for anything a Half Marathon and below, I want the raw speed of the Vaporfly 4.

Nike Vaporfly 4 Specs: Weight, Drop, and Stack Height

We can talk about energy return and ride quality all day, but sometimes you just need the raw data. Here is the breakdown of the weight, stack height, and drop that give this shoe its distinct character:

Nike Vaporfly 4 Shoe Specs

Weight 190g (6.7 oz)
Heel Stack 35 mm
Forefoot Stack 29 mm
Heel-to-Toe Drop 6 mm
Midsole Material Nike ZoomX Foam
Plate Type Carbon Fiber Flyplate
Support Type Neutral
Surface Road Racing

Fit, Sizing, and Durability: Addressing Heel Slippage

It wouldn’t be an honest review without touching on the flaws. Despite the improvements in the midsole, the upper still has quirks.

  • Heel Slippage: Despite Nike’s efforts to refine the heel counter, it is still prone to slippage. I can’t stress this enough: you need a tight lockdown. I recommend using a runner’s loop (heel lock lacing) to ensure your foot stays planted.
  • The “Rock Magnet” Outsole: The exposed ZoomX foam and the cutout design on the outsole are great for weight savings (the shoe feels like it disappears on your foot), but they are terrible for gravel. The outsole picks up rocks constantly. If your local race is on a pristine road, you’re fine. If there’s loose gravel? You’ll be picking stones out of your shoes at the finish line.

Final Verdict: Is the Nike Vaporfly 4 Worth It?

The Nike Vaporfly 4 is a fun, fast shoe that offers pure, unadulterated speed with a level of stability the previous version lacked.

And here is the best part: Because we are a bit into the product cycle, you can find some amazing deals. I was able to snag my pair on sale for $120. If you see them at that price, don’t hesitate. It is arguably the best speed-per-dollar value on the market right now.

Our Take If you can lock down the heel, the Nike Vaporfly 4 is the most fun you can have in a 5K—offering a smooth, more stable ride than the Vaporfly 3.

Nike Vaporfly 4 Review Summary & Ratings

  • Speed: 9.5/10 Pure, unadulterated speed. It is bouncier and more aggressive than the Vaporfly 3, making it an absolute weapon for 5K and 10K PBs.
  • Stability: 8/10 A surprising improvement. While it’s still a high-stack racer, it feels significantly more “mature” and planted than the wilder Vaporfly 3.
  • Comfort & Fit: 7/10 A mixed bag. The shoe is incredibly light and disappears on foot, but the heel slippage is a persistent annoyance that demands a specific lacing strategy.
  • Durability: 6/10 The weak link. The exposed foam creases early, and the outsole is a magnet for rocks. It’s built for race day, not for longevity.
  • Value: 10/10 At the $120 price point I paid, this is unbeatable. You simply cannot find this level of carbon-plated performance elsewhere for the price of a daily trainer.
  • Overall Score: 8/10 (A 10/10 for 5k/10k racers on a budget that can find a good deal).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the Nike Vaporfly 4 more stable than the Vaporfly 3?

Yes. In my experience, the Vaporfly 4 is a more “mature” and stable version of the racer. It retains the bounce and speed but feels less precarious than the Vaporfly 3, making it easier to handle around corners.

Can I run a marathon in the Nike Vaporfly 4?

You certainly can, but it might not be the most comfortable option. The Vaporfly 4 is optimized for speed and is lighter, but it offers less leg-saving protection than the Alphafly. Most runners prefer the Alphafly for the full marathon distance to keep their legs fresh.

How does the sizing of the Vaporfly 4 run?

The Vaporfly 4 generally runs true to size, but the heel lockdown can be tricky. Ensure you lace them tightly to prevent heel slippage.

Is the Vaporfly 4 durable?

It is a racing shoe, so durability is not its primary feature. The outsole is thin and prone to picking up rocks, and the exposed foam will show wear faster than a daily trainer. Save these for race day and key workouts.

When was the Nike Vaporfly 4 released?

The Nike Vaporfly 4 was officially released in March 2025 (following the standard two-year update cycle from the Vaporfly 3). Because it has been on the market for roughly a year now, retailers are beginning to discount it to clear stock for upcoming models, which is why you can currently find it for such a great price.

Should I buy the Vaporfly 4 or the Alphafly 3?

It depends on the distance. If you are racing a Half Marathon or below (5K/10K), the Vaporfly 4 is the better choice—it is lighter, more agile, and corners better. For a Full Marathon, most runners prefer the Alphafly 3 because its dual Air Zoom pods and wider base offer more leg-saving cushion for the later miles.
